What the car replacement plan includes

The calculator raises today's vehicle price by the entered annual increase, subtracts the expected trade-in value, and compares the resulting cash target with current savings plus monthly contributions.

  • Trade-in value is uncertain and should be stress-tested.
  • The target excludes financing unless you deliberately leave a gap.
  • Registration, insurance and initial repairs may need separate cash.

Plan the replacement before the current car fails

A planned replacement date creates time to save, compare models and inspect alternatives. Waiting for a major failure can compress the decision into a few days and increase reliance on expensive financing.

Set the date from reliability, repair history, safety needs and expected use rather than age alone. A well-maintained car may justify a later date, while essential transport may require more margin.

Stress-test price and trade-in value

Vehicle prices and resale values are uncertain. Run a higher purchase price and a lower trade-in value together because a weak resale market can affect both sides of the transaction.

The model does not include financing cost. If the savings target intentionally leaves an amount to finance, calculate the future payment separately and test it against the household budget.

Replacement cash has three uncertain parts

Price, resale value and timing should be stressed together before the date becomes urgent.

Include the first month of ownership

Registration, insurance or takaful, inspection, tyres, servicing and immediate repairs can require cash near purchase. Add them to the target or hold them in a separate vehicle fund.

Keep emergency savings separate. A replacement fund is for a foreseeable event. If the date changes, the dedicated balance remains available for the same purpose rather than becoming ordinary spending.

Common questions about this calculator

Is expected trade-in value reliable?

No. It is a scenario input affected by condition, mileage and market demand. Run a lower trade-in case before deciding the monthly contribution.

Does the result include a vehicle loan?

No. It shows the cash target and savings gap. If part of the future purchase will be financed, test that payment separately in the household budget.
