Financial calculator formulas and methodology
Each calculator uses the entered values in a stated formula, shows a planning estimate and identifies important costs or uncertainty that the model leaves out.
Savings goal
The savings goal calculator compounds the current balance monthly using the annual rate divided by twelve, then adds the contribution. It solves for the finish date, the contribution required by an entered deadline and the balance achievable by that deadline. It assumes a constant rate and contribution.
Emergency fund target
The emergency fund target calculator multiplies essential monthly expenses by the lower and upper reserve-month inputs, then adds one entered deductible or known exposure. It subtracts current emergency savings from each target and divides the lower gap by the monthly contribution. Interest is omitted, and the range remains a household judgment rather than a universal requirement.
Mortgage readiness
The mortgage payment and readiness calculator uses the standard fixed-payment formula on price less down payment. It adds entered recurring property charges and a maintenance allowance. Ratios use gross income, while household pressure uses take-home income and a personal ceiling. Cash after purchase subtracts down payment and the transaction-cost allowance. These are diagnostics, not financing approvals.
Down payment
The down payment savings planner calculates home price times the down-payment percentage, plus the closing-cost allowance and desired post-closing reserve. The monthly saving amount divides the remaining target by months. Interest on savings is omitted to keep short planning periods conservative.
Investment comparison
The investment fee and return comparison uses monthly compounding at each assumed annual return minus annual fee, with contributions added monthly. Returns are smooth and hypothetical. Taxes, inflation, bid-ask spreads and volatility are omitted, so results must not be read as forecasts.
Debt payoff
The multi-debt payoff calculator applies one-twelfth of each annual rate monthly, pays every entered minimum and directs the remaining shared budget by highest rate for avalanche or lowest balance for snowball. Cleared payments roll forward. The model stops when the budget cannot cover minimums or create principal progress.
Net worth
The net worth and liquidity check subtracts listed liabilities from listed assets. Liquidity months divide cash by essential monthly expenses. The tool does not estimate taxes, selling costs or penalties, so users should enter conservative realizable asset values.
Cash-flow buffer
The monthly cash-flow buffer planner subtracts fixed spending, flexible spending and one-twelfth of annual irregular costs from take-home income. Time to the buffer divides the remaining buffer gap by that margin and rounds up to a full month.
Sinking fund
The sinking-fund contribution calculator subtracts the amount already reserved from the expected cost. Required monthly saving divides that gap by contributions remaining. Interest is omitted because these goals are usually short and the rate may change.
Housing cost comparison
The rent versus buy break-even calculator models cumulative rent, financing amortization, recurring ownership costs, maintenance, projected sale proceeds and the alternative growth of upfront cash over the selected holding period. Appreciation, rent growth and alternative return are user scenarios, not forecasts.
Portfolio rebalancing
The portfolio rebalancing calculator compares each entered holding with its target percentage after adding new cash. Target dollar values equal the final portfolio value multiplied by each target. Contribution-only and full-trade changes are shown separately. Taxes and trading restrictions are excluded.
Monthly budget
The monthly budget planner subtracts fixed costs, flexible spending, debt minimums, one-twelfth of annual costs and the goal contribution from take-home income. The difference is unassigned cash or a shortfall. No category is inferred from bank data.
Financial independence target
The financial independence number calculator divides annual spending by the entered withdrawal rate, then projects current investments and monthly contributions with monthly compounding. Withdrawal rate, return and spending are user scenarios, not promises.
Irregular income floor
The irregular income floor calculator averages three lower-income months, removes the entered planning set-aside and compares the remainder with essentials. The reserve target multiplies essentials by the selected months. The tool does not calculate tax obligations.
Salary increase allocation
The salary increase allocation calculator subtracts old take-home pay from new take-home pay, funds the entered essential-cost increase and applies each allocation percentage to the remaining increase. Shares above 100 percent are shown as overcommitted.
Compound savings
The compound savings calculator compounds the balance monthly at the entered annual rate divided by twelve and adds each monthly deposit. The output separates total cash deposited from modeled interest. The rate is held constant for illustration.
Fixed savings deadline
The savings goal deadline calculator grows the current balance for the selected months, uses the monthly annuity factor and solves for the equal contribution needed to reach the target. Zero contribution cycles cannot fund a remaining gap.
Education savings
The education savings planner grows today's cost by the education-cost assumption and separately compounds the dedicated savings path. The funding gap is future cost minus projected savings. Scholarships, loans and institution-specific fees are not inferred.
Vehicle replacement fund
The car replacement savings calculator grows today's vehicle price, subtracts expected trade-in value and compares that target with current cash plus monthly contributions. Financing cost, registration and protection are outside the model unless added to the target.
Credit card minimum payment
The credit card minimum payment calculator adds one-twelfth of the annual rate monthly and pays the greater of the entered balance percentage or dollar floor. New purchases, daily-balance methods and issuer-specific fees are excluded.
Balance transfer
The balance transfer calculator adds the transfer fee to principal, applies the promotional rate for the selected months and then applies the post-promotion rate. The comparison holds the monthly payment constant and excludes new purchases.
Debt consolidation
The debt consolidation calculator models two current repayment schedules and compares them with a standard amortizing facility whose principal includes the origination fee. Security, variable-rate changes and settlement charges require separate review.
Extra debt payment
The extra debt payment calculator runs the same balance and annual rate with the current payment and with that payment plus the entered overage. Months and interest are compared only when each payment creates principal progress.
Mortgage affordability
The mortgage affordability calculator uses the lowest entered or diagnostic complete-payment ceiling, removes property costs and converts the remaining instalment into principal with the fixed-payment formula. The output is not a lender approval.
Mortgage overpayment
The mortgage overpayment calculator derives the scheduled fixed payment, then adds the entered monthly overage and compares both amortization paths. Product-specific lock-in, redraw and principal-allocation rules are not modeled.
Refinancing break-even
The refinancing break-even calculator derives current and proposed fixed payments. Simple break-even is upfront cost divided by monthly payment reduction. The tool also shows total modeled payments because changing the term can make payment-only break-even incomplete.
Home closing cash
The home closing cost calculator adds down payment, user-entered legal and stamp allowances, valuation, protection, moving and retained reserve cash. Percentage allowances are not current fee quotations and should be replaced with written evidence.
Investment entry timing
The lump sum versus monthly investing calculator invests the same starting cash immediately or in equal amounts over the selected entry months. Both paths use the same smooth return, while cash waiting to enter earns zero in the model.
Inflation-adjusted return
The inflation-adjusted return calculator projects the nominal balance with monthly contributions, then divides by the compounded inflation factor. The real result expresses approximate purchasing power in today's dollars.
Retirement savings gap
The retirement savings gap calculator inflates the desired annual income to retirement, divides it by the planning withdrawal rate and subtracts the projected investment balance. Pension income, tax and changing retirement spending are not inferred.
Rounding and privacy
Currency results are rounded for display after calculation. Inputs and results remain in the browser. The public tools do not transmit or store the values.
